Hi Friend,

I am writing to ask for your support for a important and powerful campaign on campus by Divest Whitman, a student group fighting to keep Whitman’s endowment out of significant fossil fuel investments. The students are calling on the alumni community to step up and help convince the college that divestment is a necessary step, especially if the college wants to call itself a leader on sustainability and environmental work.

The case for divestment is becoming overwhelming. It was recently announced institutions and individuals have collectively pledged to remove $2.6 trillion from fossil fuels. If Whitman doesn’t divest, it will be quickly left behind in this global movement.

In support of the goal, there is a petition for alumni to sign on in support of Divest Whitman – view the petition and add your name here!

The students in Divest Whitman have worked so hard over the past few years, but the Board of Trustees still isn’t listening. Hours of meetings, endless negotiation with the Board, piles of research on divestment strategy – these incredible students need our support.

Climate change threatens the college, and unfortunately Whitman is perpetuating it. By investing our dollars in the fossil fuel industry, they’re financing industries that perpetuate climate catastrophe by lobbying against legislation and funding public misinformation campaigns. This isn’t acceptable.
